Facebook has rolled out two updates to make Reels more social and searchable: “friend bubbles” (which highlight content liked by your friends) and AI-powered topic search links attached to Reels.
These changes let users see what people they already know are engaging with, and tap straight into more of that themed content (like “soup dumpling recipes”) with one click.
For online marketers, this means two new levers: Social proof and discovery. First, your engagement from followers could carry more weight – not just likes from strangers, but likes by someone’s friend may be more visible. Second, being included under relevant topic searches means getting surfaced in new contexts.
If your content aligns well with topical themes people are already exploring, you could capture casual scrollers who are actively seeking that subject. In short: Pattern your Reels around evergreen or trending themes and foster genuine engagement – because Facebook is pushing to make Reels feel more like human recommendations plus intelligent search.
John’s take: Facebook’s #1 priority is to increase shareholder value by delivering a great user experience. Your priority is to stay consistent with your content strategy and ride the wave of change as it happens.
