Why Quiz and Survey Funnels Are the Smartest Way to Build an Engaged Audience After 50

If you caught my last video on the webinar funnel, you'll know I'm a firm believer in building trust before asking for anything. Webinars do that brilliantly. But there's another type of funnel that, in my experience, takes engagement to a completely different level.

I'm talking about quiz and survey funnels.

The John McLauchlan Channel

Now, before you glaze over thinking this is some complicated tech thing that's beyond you, let me be straight. This isn't complicated…

It's actually one of the simplest funnels to set up, and I'll show you exactly how I've done it. But what makes it genuinely powerful isn't the tech. It's the psychology behind it.

And that's what I want to walk you through today.

⇒ Quick Win

If you already have a landing page or website, you can add a quiz element today without rebuilding anything.

Start with just one question on your homepage that speaks directly to your audience's biggest concern. Something like “What's your biggest challenge when it comes to building income in retirement?”

…With three or four simple options, even that single question changes the dynamic from “here's what I'm selling” to “tell me about you.”

It immediately increases engagement and gives you insight into what your visitors actually want, which makes everything else you do more effective.

What Makes a Quiz Funnel So Effective

Here's the thing about most lead generation. You put up a page, you offer something free, someone gives you their email, and then you hope they open your emails. That's the standard approach and it works to a degree. But with a quiz funnel, something different happens.

When someone starts answering questions about themselves, their goals, their situation, their challenges, they're investing their attention.

Once someone starts investing attention, they're far more likely to keep going. In psychology, this is called the commitment and consistency theory. Once we've taken a step down a path, we naturally want to keep walking in that direction. It's just how we're wired.

So by the time someone has answered four or five questions about what they want from an online business, how many hours they've got, what kind of income they're aiming for, they're not just a name on your list. They're engaged. They've told you what matters to them. And now you can actually talk to them about the things they care about, rather than guessing.

That's the real power here. You're not just collecting email addresses. You're starting a conversation.

How My Quiz Funnel Works in Practice

Let me walk you through exactly what happens when someone visits my website.

The first thing they see is a simple question. Which online business is best for you? And there's a button that says “Take the one-minute quiz.”

That's it. No long sales letter. No wall of text. Just a question that most people in our audience genuinely want answered.

When they click, they're taken through a short series of questions. Four questions to be precise. I've found that two feels too shallow and six starts to feel like a chore. Four is the sweet spot where people feel they've been properly heard without losing patience.

The first question asks where they are right now. Are they a complete beginner? Have they tried a few things? Are they already running a business but looking to improve? This gets them talking about themselves straight away, and that's important. People engage when you ask about them, not when you talk about yourself.

The second question is about what their ideal business looks like. Do they want to build residual income for retirement? Create and sell digital courses? Build something around AI? Scale what they've already got? This is the key question, and I'll explain why in a moment.

Then I ask about their income goals and how many hours a week they can realistically commit. Both of these are scored equally because I'm not trying to segment people by ambition or availability. I'm segmenting them by what they actually want to build.

And that second question, the one about their ideal business, is the only question where the scoring differs. Someone who wants residual income for retirement gets directed down a completely different path to someone who wants to create digital courses. Different opt-in. Different thank you page. Different email sequence. Different recommendation.

Everything else scores the same. It keeps the whole system beautifully simple on my end while making the experience feel genuinely personal for the person taking the quiz.

The most common mistake I see with quiz funnels, especially from people over 50 who are new to digital marketing, is trying to segment by everything.

They want to sort people by age, income, experience level, hours available, goals, interests, and favourite colour.

It sounds thorough, but it creates a nightmare on the back end. You end up with dozens of email sequences to maintain and pages to update, and the whole thing grinds to a halt because it's too much to manage.

The truth is, you only need one segmentation point. Pick the single question that determines what your audience actually wants, and segment on that alone.

Score everything else equally. It keeps the system manageable and the experience personal. Simple always wins.

Why Segmentation Changes Everything

Here's where this gets really interesting for anyone who's been building an email list and wondering why nobody seems to open their emails.

Years ago, the big brag in online marketing was list size. “I've got 25,000 subscribers.” And people would nod, impressed. But honestly? A list of 25,000 people who aren't engaged is worth less than a list of 500 who are.

I'd rather have 500 people who actually want to hear from me than tens of thousands who signed up for something free three years ago and forgot I existed.

When you segment people based on their actual answers, you can speak directly to their situation. Someone who told you they want residual income for retirement doesn't want to receive emails about scaling an e-commerce empire. They want to know how to build something steady and reliable that'll support them when they stop working. And when your emails reflect that, people notice. They open. They click. They reply. They trust you.

That's the difference between broadcasting and having a conversation. And for our audience, people over 50 who've been around long enough to spot generic marketing a mile off, that personal touch matters enormously.

The Results Page Is Where Trust Gets Built

After someone completes the quiz, they land on a page that tells them their results are ready and asks for their name and email. The details then get sent to their inbox, not displayed on the page itself. I've talked about this before, but it's worth repeating.

Always send the good stuff to their email. It keeps your list clean, filters out the bots and tyre kickers, and ensures the people on your list are genuine.

When they open the email and click through to their results, they find a personalised video from me talking through their answers. Not a generic “thanks for taking the quiz” message.

I reference their actual responses. If they said they wanted residual income, I talk about that. If they said they struggle with generating leads, I acknowledge it. Because everyone struggles with leads.

And then I give them a recommendation. A specific next step based on what they told me they wanted. If they're after residual income for retirement, I send them to a page about building residual income streams. Not a page about digital courses. Not a page about AI tools. The exact thing they asked about.

This is why quiz funnels convert so well. By the time someone reaches your recommendation, they don't feel like they've been marketed to. They feel like they've been listened to. And there's a world of difference between those two things.

If you've already got a quiz funnel running and you're generating segmented subscribers, here's where you take it further.

Use the data from your quiz responses to inform your content strategy across every platform.

If seventy percent of your quiz takers select “residual income for retirement” as their ideal business model, that tells you exactly what to create videos about, what to write articles on, and what angle to lead with in your marketing. You can also create retargeting audiences based on quiz completion.

Someone who started the quiz but didn't finish is a warm lead who got distracted. A simple follow-up ad or email saying “You didn't get your results” can recover a significant percentage of those people.

And for those who completed the quiz but didn't take the recommended next step, a short email sequence addressing the most common objections for their specific segment can move the needle considerably.

Your quiz isn't just a funnel. It's a research tool, a content planner and a retargeting engine all in one.

Setting Up the Quiz Isn't as Hard as You Think

I know what some of you are thinking right now. “John, this sounds brilliant, but it also sounds like a lot of work.”

And I won't lie. When you first set it up, there's a bit of effort involved. You need your quiz questions. You need separate opt-in pages for each segment. Separate thank you pages. Separate email sequences. If you do what I did and record individual videos for each result, that's additional time too.

But here's the thing. You do this work once. Then it runs. Day after day, week after week, month after month. While you're walking the dog, having lunch with the grandchildren, or doing whatever it is you'd rather be doing with your time, your quiz funnel is out there having conversations on your behalf. Asking the right questions. Segmenting people properly. Sending them exactly what they need.

And the framework itself? You don't have to build it from scratch. I built mine inside my funnel builder, and if you've got access to the same tool, you can literally copy my funnel and change the questions to suit your own audience. The structure, the layout, the flow, it's all there. You just make it yours.

The Cost of Overcomplicating Things

Now, I want to address something that I see far too often, especially with people our age who are researching online business tools. There's a tendency to think that more expensive means better. And when it comes to quiz funnel software, there are plenty of options out there charging forty-nine, ninety-seven, even two hundred and ninety-seven pounds a month for dedicated quiz platforms.

I've seen them. I've used some of them in my time. And for the most part, they do the same thing that I'm doing inside a funnel builder that costs me twenty-five pounds a month.

That same funnel builder gives me unlimited funnels, unlimited domain names, hosting on Amazon AWS so it's fast and secure, and I don't have to worry about the technical side because someone else handles that. I used to have my own hosting. It was expensive by comparison and came with headaches I didn't need.

For twenty-five pounds a month, I can build quiz funnels, webinar funnels, sales funnels, booking calendars, the lot. I used to pay twelve pounds a month for a separate calendar booking tool alone. Why would I keep paying for individual subscriptions when one tool does everything?

And this is something I feel strongly about. Cash flow matters. Especially when you're building a business in or approaching retirement. Every unnecessary subscription is money walking out the door. The average online marketer spends somewhere around two hundred pounds a month on software subscriptions just to keep things running. If you can replace most of that with one tool, that's not just convenient. That's sensible business.

Here's what I'd like you to do this week.

Write down four questions you'd ask a potential customer if you were sitting across from them at a coffee shop.

  1. What's their current situation?
  2. What do they want to achieve?
  3. What's holding them back?
  4. How serious are they about making a change?

Those four questions are the bones of your quiz funnel.

Once you've got them written down, decide which single question you'll use for segmentation. That's the one where each answer leads to a different recommendation.

Then set up a simple quiz inside whatever funnel builder you're using. If you're with HBA, copy a done-for-you template and customise it with your questions, your branding and your voice. Don't wait until every email sequence is perfect.

Get the quiz live, start learning what your audience tells you, and build out the follow-up as you go. Progress beats perfection every single time.

By the way, if you're looking for a way to build a rock-solid residual income you can actually trust, check out the Turnkey Residual Income System at 3minuteplan.com.

You can earn £128 in residual commissions per customer, and there's a done-for-you sales system that does the selling for you.

Why This Matters for Your Retirement

I deal with a lot of people over 50 who are in a very specific situation. They're either approaching retirement or already there, and they're looking for something that can genuinely support them financially. Not a get-rich-quick scheme. Not the latest shiny object. Something real, something proven, and something they can build with confidence.

Quiz and survey funnels aren't glamorous. They're not a trend. They're not going to go viral on social media. But they work. They build genuine engagement. They help you understand your audience. And they position you as someone who listens and helps rather than someone who just sells.

For our audience, that's everything. Because when you're over 50 and you've seen your share of empty promises, what you really want is something that makes sense. Something you can look at and think, “Yes, I can see how this works. I can see why it works. And I can do this.”

That's what a quiz funnel gives you. A way to connect with real people who have real needs, and to help them find what they're looking for. And when you do that well, the sales take care of themselves.

Stop Chasing Trends and Start Building Trust

I see so many people on social media jumping on the latest trend, hoping something will stick. And I understand why. It's tempting when you see someone apparently making thousands from a 30-second video. But trends fade. What doesn't fade is a genuine connection with an audience who trusts you.

Putting yourself on the front end, showing up on video, asking the right questions, giving people quality, that's what builds a business you can rely on. Not just for the next few weeks but for years.

Quiz and survey funnels are one of the most effective tools I've come across for doing exactly that. They give you leverage. They work when you're not working. And they ensure that when someone does hear from you, what you're saying is relevant to them.

Stop trying to be perfect and start being genuine. That's what people respond to. Especially our people.
