Running an online business has never been more accessible. With all the tools, training, and even AI-powered platforms like ChatGPT at our fingertips, success should be straightforward. Yet, around 98% of online businesses still fail.
So, why is that?
In this post, I’ll break down the three core reasons most online businesses struggle—and more importantly, how you can rise above them and build something sustainable and profitable.
1. Lack of Knowledge (or the “Toe in the Water” Approach)
A common mistake new business owners make is relying too heavily on software or shortcuts, hoping to succeed without truly understanding the mechanics of the business.
Here’s the truth: You’ve got to learn your craft.
Whether it’s affiliate marketing, coaching, or eCommerce, success doesn’t come from pressing a few buttons. It comes from knowing the ins and outs of your business, marketing, messaging, funnels, and more.
Yes, automation and AI help, but they’re not a substitute for foundational knowledge. Give yourself at least 12 months to learn and implement.
Don’t just dip your toe in, get ALL in. That’s where the breakthroughs happen Share on X
2. Unrealistic Expectations (The 10-Minute Myth)
The internet is full of bold promises: “Click three buttons and make $1,000/day.” Sound familiar?
Sadly, many people are sold false expectations, and when quick wins don’t happen, they give up.
Here’s the reality:
- Most people overestimate what they can do in a month, and underestimate what’s possible in a year.
- Success requires consistency, not just enthusiasm. Enthusiasm gets you started, discipline keeps you going.
- Focus on building habits, developing your skillset, and bringing your existing strengths into your business (e.g. writing, presenting, tech skills, etc.)
Want a fast track? Start documenting your journey. Video content, both short and long-form, is one of the most powerful ways to build trust and visibility.
3. The “Diving Board Effect” (Fear of Starting)
Imagine standing on the edge of a diving board, hesitant, nervous, afraid of judgment. That’s how many people feel about launching a business, starting a YouTube channel, or publishing their first piece of content.
But here’s the key insight: You’ve got to jump.
Once you do, everything changes. The fear fades, the momentum builds, and your confidence grows.
People don’t fail, they just quit before they give themselves a chance. Share on X
The Bottom Line
To build a sustainable online business, you don’t need gimmicks or empty promises. You need:
- A commitment to learning
- Realistic expectations about what it takes
- The courage to just get started
